About Us

Rooted In The Peak Wilderness

The story of a conservation-led retreat on the banks of the Magal Oya — where scientists, farmers and travellers share one forest.

Our Story

From Field Science To Farm Stays

The Tree Fern began in 2020 with a simple conviction: the best way to protect the Peak Wilderness is to help people fall in love with it. On the right bank of the Magal Oya River, at the edge of a UNESCO World Heritage sanctuary, our scientists, wildlife conservationists and environmental specialists turned a working hillside estate into a place where guests live the research, the farming and the forest — not just look at it.

Six years on, we remain a conservation project first and a retreat second. Every stay, hike and jar of honey funds fieldwork, supports indigenous cultural values and keeps regenerative agriculture alive in Deraniyagala.

Why We Exist

Vision & Mission

Our Vision

A Sri Lanka where wild places thrive alongside the communities who steward them — where conservation is not a fence around nature but a way of living within it.

Our Mission

To support indigenous cultural values, advance regenerative and eco-friendly agriculture, and champion ecosystem conservation across the Peak Wilderness — funded by mindful travel and honest harvests.

What Guides Us

Three Roots, One Canopy

Conservation First

Every decision starts with the forest. Our team keeps biology and conservation records, monitors endemic species, and practises leave-no-trace in everything we host.

Community Rooted

We buy, hire and harvest locally — empowering traditional livelihoods from kithul tapping to handmade paper, so the village prospers with the sanctuary.

Regenerative Agro-Living

Our farm is a classroom. Guests join real cultivation — paddy, spice, apiary — practising food sovereignty and soil-positive agriculture.

The People Behind The Fern

No tour-desk staff here — the person guiding your hike is usually the one writing the species records.

Conservation Scientists

Botanists and ecologists who maintain our biodiversity records and lead the research your visit supports.

Wildlife & Field Guides

Trackers and naturalists born in these hills, trained in low-impact guiding and first response.

Agro-Community Partners

Farmers, kithul tappers and beekeepers of Maliboda who host the hands-on side of every stay.
